Radiopaque Markers for Precision GI Transit Testing

IntraMarX™ is a capsule-based diagnostic tool that delivers precise insights into colonic motility disorders such as chronic constipation, colonic inertia, and functional outlet delay. Each IntraMarX capsule contains 24 tiny radiopaque rings that become visible via abdominal X-ray after the capsule dissolves in the GI tract. Depending on the method used—Hinton (single capsule) or Metcalf (three capsule)—IntraMarX allows clinicians to assess overall and segmental transit times with a high degree of accuracy. This simple, well-tolerated test helps differentiate between global colonic hypomotility and rectosigmoid dysfunction, guiding appropriate treatment pathways.

Why Colonic Transit Testing Matters

Supporting Diagnosis of Complex Constipation Conditions

Not all constipation is the same. In some patients, symptoms stem from impaired colonic muscle activity (colonic inertia), while others may struggle with outlet dysfunction at the rectum. IntraMarX plays a critical role in identifying the underlying cause of constipation, particularly in patients who fail to respond to first-line treatments like fiber, laxatives, or lifestyle changes. By mapping the movement of markers through the colon, physicians can more confidently diagnose slow-transit constipation or outlet delay, and tailor therapy—whether conservative, pharmacologic, or surgical.
